On Friday night in downtown Orleans, adults and children alike flocked to hear an evening presentation on birds, view local children’s art and International Migratory Bird Day conservation displays, and to commemorate the founder of the birding event, deceased Six Rivers National Forest district biologist, Tony Hacking. The community-sponsored event began with a moment of silence in memory of Tony, followed by stories and reminiscing about the well-respected wildlife biologist. On display were the 63 colorful bird drawings that Forks of Salmon, Orleans, and Somes Bar elementary schoolchildren submitted to the Godwit Days children’s art contest. Their teacher, Amanita Mollier, was present to accept gifts for the six winners announced by contest organizer Sue Leskiw. Next, birders in the audience were thrilled with stories told by Daryl Coldren about his quest to break the existing Humboldt County Big Year record of 316 bird species. Finally, Tom Leskiw presented an informative slide show on some of those birds that would go into beating the record as well as ones that might be seen the next morning.
